Instead of dwelling on our partings, perhaps we should look with hope toward the joy of meeting again. We do not have to wait until our own deaths to do this. We can meet our loved ones in the things they loved and in the people they touched. We meet them in how we see the world and in the imprints they have left on us. I look forward to being reunited with those I love, and I have no doubt that I will be, but I try to live in the present moment, not in the past or in the future. Here and now, we have the opportunity to send love to those who have died, to thank them for their love, to pray for them, and to trust that their lives, and ours, are ongoing. There is sweetness in sorrow when we know we would do it all again, despite the pain. And there is comfort in the words that come after the final breath, those we cannot hear but feel nonetheless—the promise, I’ll see you soon.
